Much as we love fresh air, there are times when we all want to huddle in the warm – kids included.
It’s not always easy for children to let off steam at home though, and going to the park is tricky when it’s raining or blowing a gale.
So we’ve rounded up ten indoor children’s activities where you can be sure your little darlings can burn off some energy and have huge amounts of fun!
Galactic Golf
All the fun of golf – but in the warm! This indoor 18-hole golfing facility welcomes visitors to enjoy a Moon Mission or Cosmic Quest adventure (you can do both!). Golf on the surface of the moon, find a crashed spaceship and look out for aliens!
Open Play Gym Sessions
Utopia Gymnastics runs parent and toddler open play sessions every Friday, where you can try out the equipment without the structure of a regular gymnastics class. My little boy used to LOVE jumping into the foam pit during the winter months, and generally tearing up and down the trampolines. I put my baby in a sling and we had a great time!
Go Swimming at Huddersfield Splash Park
No one will be shivering on the side at Huddersfield Splash Park. From water buckets, water jets, a lazy river, fun pool and spa pool to slides for all ages, everyone will be sure to have a blast.
Sessions last 90 minutes and it’s best to book in advance.
Roller Skate at Halifax YMCA
Skating never fails to put big grins on my kids’ faces, and at £3-3.50 per person (including skate hire), it’s a great deal.
Family skates run most Fridays (6-8pm), Saturdays (12-1.30pm) and Sundays (2-3.30pm) and there are special sessions plus a skate school during school holidays.
There’s also Playworld Huddersfield (Marsh) with a roller skating rink for age four plus, a four storey soft play gym for kids up to age ten (with a section for younger children too) and a world street kitchen.
Reload Nerf Zone
Another great energy burner, this Army-style open Nerf shooting zone is fun and active for the whole family. Adults can join in too, or relax in the cafe while the kids let of steam during a one hour session . Suitable for kids aged four and over.
Make something fabulous at Custard Create
Did you know there is a little art studio on the upper level of The Piece Hall? Inside, there’s a lovely creative area for kids, with tables, chairs and drawer upon drawer of arts materials to help them unleash their imaginations.
The arts treasure chest doesn’t run every day, but you can find out when it’s open by calling in advance.
Go Climbing at ROKT Activity Centre
Perfect for little thrill seekers, children’s climbing sessions really get the adrenalin pumping. My oldest and her cousins had a great time (dad and uncle did too, competing to climb the highest!) and I could not BELIEVE how high a friend’s six-year-old climbed fearlessly during her first session!
Climbing, bouldering and caving sessions are running through February half term for kids aged five and over.
Hoverkart Mania
New indoor electric karting and play centre with two different type of kart for children aged five and over to race around on.
There’s a special little track with mini vehicles for younger children too, and a seating area for adult to watch the fun. There’s also air hockey and pool.
Trampolining
Not much burns a child’s energy like a bouncing session! We’re spoilt for choice in Calderdale and close by, with Airtime Halifax (Calderdale Business Park), Adrenaline International in Liversedge, and Tramp2lean in Bradford, to name a few. Look out for special deals, such as after school bounces, and parent and toddler sessions.
Ride a Steam Train!
Or a regular train! Hop on at your local station and go on an adventure. You can play I Spy, and see where the day takes you. If you would like more structure, both Kirklees Light Railway and Keighley & Worth Valley run special events, including a Jurassic Special with animatronic dinosaurs at KWVR during February half term.
