If you’re anything like me, going to the races is a good – child free – excuse to dress up, hang with friends and enjoy a few glasses of bubbly.
But adding kids into the mix could actually make it more fun, with most racecourses offering free admission to children (accompanied by a paying adult) and great entertainment, ranging from music to bouncy castles – especially on dedicated family race days.
Not to mention, it’s a great day out in the fresh air (which usually guarantees a decent night’s sleep later, bonus!).
So here are a few tips to ensure fun, laughter and a stress-free day.
Tips for enjoying the races with kids:

- Although children are welcome at most meets, special themed family race days offer extra entertainment and more of a family atmosphere
- Take snacks and water
- Find out where the nearest toilet (and baby changing) is when you arrive. And bring your own portable seat if your child is fussy (we just bought a collapsible seat/potty that folds away into its own bag and has been amazing for outings with our newly potty trained son)
- Take the kids to see the horses and talk to them about their names
- Let them choose the horse they like the best and if you want to, pay them a small amount if it finishes in the first three (depending on your child’s age).
- See if there is a parent and toddler room. As well as providing a bit of calm, they are often stocked with supplies and entertainment.
- Don’t worry about your darlings misbehaving – there’s plenty of space for them to run around and burn off their energy.
- Don’t expect that a day at the races with kids will be the same as a day without! Just as much fun, but in a different way!
The Press Family Raceday is fun for all the family, with seven thoroughbred races, and a Charles Owen Pony race at the beginning of the card, as well as our ‘interactive racing zone’ which includes fun and games for our youngest racegoers.
Elsewhere look out for bouncy castles and slides, face painting, pony rides and lots more.
What’s more, the majority of the rides and activities are included in the price of the ticket, and better still, KIDS RACE ABSOLUTELY FREE (under 16 when accompanied by an adult)
And for lovers of Paw Patrol, Chase will be joining us and appearing at intervals throughout the day!
- If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact the team by email [email protected] or telephone (01904) 620911. Alternatively, on a raceday any of the York Racecourse staff will be pleased to assist.
