It’s forecast to get chilly again this weekend with maybe even some snow!
We’re trying to spend more time outdoors this winter, but the kids aren’t always up for it and there’s nothing worse than little ones crying because of cold hands and feet.
We had seven winters in Canada, and learned a thing or two about keeping warm out of necessity. Then our first child was born (a winter baby) and we had to up the stakes because although we could be relied upon not to throw our hats and gloves off in a fit of rage, the same couldn’t be said for her.
So here’s what we learned about keeping babies and toddlers cozy in the cold.
- Dress them in layers so you can easily peel them back if you go indoors
- Avoid itchy skin by choosing natural, breathable fabrics, such as cotton or wool
- Baby wearing is great for keeping you both nice and toasty, thanks body heat! You can get some great baby wearing coats to cover you both, or a cover for the baby, like this one. I have the Jolly Jumper version and it’s brilliant to quickly pull on and off, especially useful for the school run.
- Pop on a hat that covers the ears and cheeks. Bonus points if they fasten under the chin too so can’t be pulled off!
- Wear decent mittens. Easier said than done with a wriggly child, but there are some great options out there. These ones have a long zip that extends near the thumb, and you can buy mitten clips to stop them getting lost. We find ski mittens the best type for playing in the snow, and have found cheap pairs at Aldi and Lidl. Carrying a spare pair is always a good idea too, in case one gets wet.
- Switch wellies for snowboots, or buy snuggly welly liners. An extra layer really help little ones get through a winter walk. This year we got them from Sainsbury’s but have also bought from Asda in the past, and the Lidl ones that are lined and flash are big favourites! They are insulated, waterproof and the best bit, they stay on their feet!
- Use a pushchair cover. During a particularly horrendous winter, we invested in a Manito pushchair cover and it was amazing. It fits most pushchairs and our toddler felt like she was in a greenhouse and didn’t need to wear gloves or a hat. Every time we unzipped the cover to check on her, she was super cozy and warm.
- Don’t use thick coats or snowsuits in the car! Every winter there is a campaign to inform parents and carers not to put their baby or child in a thick coat or snowsuit in a car seat. Please don’t do it as there is too much material between the child and the car seat straps, leaving space for your child to become unsecured in the car seat
- Put a spare coat or snowsuit in the car in case you break down. I’ve definitely experienced shivering by the side of the road after a break down, and really wouldn’t want the same for my kids.
- Use a moisturiser or balm to prevent dry skin. Stop skin getting itchy and sore by smoothing on some moisturiser or balm to lock in the moisture. Apparently Lansinoh nipple cream does a great job!
