It’s one of the tastiest days of the year, and a great excuse to sneak some sugar into tea time!
Pancake Day’s a huge favourite in our house and although there’s much debate over the toppings (so we have them all!), we toss up a storm with traditional and American pancakes in the mix.
This year lockdown means we can’t enjoy restaurant pancakes, so they will all have to be made at home (although you can buy them ready made from the supermarket!).
Whether you’re after sweet or savoury, traditional or something with a twist, here are four delicious recipes, and five fun pancake-themed activities for the little ones:
1. Create a Pancake Kitchen Role Play Area – put out some of the utensils you might use for making pancakes and print photos / set out the different ingredients used in making pancakes!
2. Flip the Pancake Memory Game– make a stack of ‘pancakes’ – ideally out of card but paper will work as well. Draw letters, numbers or shapes on pairs of pancakes. Depending on the age of your child, you may only want to do a few pairs. Turn all of the pancakes face down and shuffle them around. With your little one, take turns to turn two pancakes over at a time, trying to find matching pairs. Fun and educational!
3. Pancake Treasure Hunt – Cut out some paper pancakes and hide them around the house and garden (like an Easter egg hunt). Older children could have clues on the back of each one that leads them to the next.
4. Read Pancake themed Stories – Ideas include ‘The Runaway Pancake’, ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’, ‘The Pancake King.’ You can find lots more ideas here.
5. What would you like on your Pancake – Draw or print some pancakes and children can have fun decorating them with all the toppings of their imaginations!
Why not kick off the festivities with a savoury pancake! This one is sweetened with corn, so a good one to try with children.

These pancakes are sweet, delicious and can be made gluten free by replacing the oats with GF oats.

American Pancakes are my favourite, and were my biggest pregnancy craving, smothered in fruit, syrup and cream! Mmmmm! When I do them at home, I do a mixture of plain and chocolate chip (sprinkle in the chocolate chips while they are cooking) and sometimes a handful of blueberries and grated lemon. Maple syrup and bacon are both great toppings, but my kids go for squirty cream!
