Mother’s Day is upon us and while we’re all hoping for breakfast in bed and a nice lie in, some family time would be nice too.
Sleep ins don’t exist in my house – unless you count lying in bed with three children sat on various parts of your body – but I know the kids would love some of these Mother’s Day events.
Peppa is coming to The Edge Play Gym on Mother’s Day (probably giving Mummy Pig a well-deserved rest!) and your little ones can play with her and enjoy picnic-style food.
£7.50 per child. Ages 0-7. Booking essential. Call 01484 400447.
Afternoon tea is always a safe bet (caffeine and cake, what’s not to like?) but it’s best to book early if you have a favourite place.
The Mill Playcafe is doing a delicious afternoon tea on Mother’s Day, (which includes children getting free entry into the play cafe). It’s £9.95 per person for a selection of sandwiches, cakes, fruit and tea, and you can upgrade to a bottle of prosecco. Kids’ afternoon tea is £5.95. You can read all about it and other Mother’s Day lunch options here.
There are afternoon tea suggestions on the Calderdale Mumbler website, too.
If you want to ensure you get a gorgeous Mother’s Day gift, book your little ones onto a workshop at the Jungle Experience in Manor Heath Park.
Kids will plant and decorate a beautiful basket of flowers, with spring flowering and foliage plants.
It costs £8 per basket (£7 PTL) with sessions running on Saturday, March 21 2020, at 10am, 11am, 12pm and 1pm.
A trip to the theatre is always special (especially if there is ice cream involved!) and Square Chapel has the perfect show on Saturday, March 21, 2020.
This new adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s Mowgli stories will take you deep into the magical heart of the jungle.
High energy, family theatre, packed with adventure, comedy, puppetry and original music. Age 4+.
Kids love trains and mums love bargains! The Mother’s Day “mums travel for free” deal at Kirklees Light Railway is a win win, with tickets valid all day on all trains, so you can have a fun family day out. Only valid on Sunday, March 22. Buy on the day, not in advance. You must be travelling with at least one other person paying full fare.
At Forgotten Forest in Brighouse, children can make special Mother’s Day gifts such as flower perfume, lip balm, bath bombs and forest school-style pizza!
Then they can run about in the woods, swing in hammocks, make mud pies, build dens and have hot chocolate around the camp fire.
There are so many lovely free places to enjoy time together outdoors. One of our favourites is St Ives, with woods to explore, a pond to walk around and feed the ducks, wonderful playground and a bird hide.
At Oakwell Hall, mums get free entry to the hall on Mother’s Day, and there are lovely grounds to run off steam in afterwards.
There’s a list of fun places to visit (not all free but all of them wonderful for families) at the end of this blog on getting kids outdoors more.
Here’s our list of places to enjoy a special Mother’s Day meal – from afternoon tea to lunch! Our list of child-friendly cafes might give you some ideas too. Or why not have the kids (with dad’s help) cook you a special brunch at home. Last year I gave them the recipe I wanted (this one from an ASDA mag) and they did a great job, with my older two making raspberry coulis while dad flipped pancakes.
My sisters and I have a lot of kids between us, and going out for afternoon tea with our mum can be pretty tricky. Last year we hired a church village hall, each brought one thing to eat and had our own afternoon tea. It was perfect, the kids ate a tonne of buns then ran up and down while we feasted on scones, jam and cream and had as many cups of tea as we liked. Here’s a list of halls that are often hired out for parties.
